Targets in teens with Neurodevelopmental disorders

    in Professional Forum

Another interesting Parental accommodation that I’ve been dealing with is parents over supporting their children do their homework when they have an LD In one case that I have, the teen gets very anxious when starting some homework tasks and the parents rush in to help to accommodate the anxiety. Sometimes it is hard to identify what is a parental accommodation for anxiety vs an appropriate accommodation for their learning difficulties...

I work with a number of dual diagnosis children and have come across the same issue. I often ask parents "What outcome are you trying to avoid with this accommodation?" If the answer is academic failure, we brainstorm appropriate ways to get the HW tasks within the zone of proximal development for a child with a learning difference. This often involves collaboration with teachers/school. If the answer is anxiety, we follow standard SPACE protocol, but part of the supportive statement addresses the particular reasons the child may be feeling anxious about homework.
