    Sit-ins

    in Professional Forum

Hi during a sit-in with a child for disruptive behavior, what should the parents do if the child runs out of the room?

    Thank you

    Beth

Hi Beth, It's my understanding the parents should remain in the room. They decide when the sit-in is over. Running out is the child's way to attempt to end the sit-in or engage them in potential escalation. They should leave if there is a safety concern (e.g. a young child leaving the house or doing something dangerous to force them to engage). If that's the case, they can say something along the lines of 'this is unacceptable, we will finish this later.' They then come back to it when they and the child are calm and rinse repeat. Hope that helps!
